Mozilla Calendaring with Lightning 0.9

I've been following the development of Sunbird, part of the Mozilla Calendar Project for a long time, perhaps even as far back as it's very beginning in 2003 when the announcement was made "Mozilla Sunbird Standalone Calendar Project Launches".

Knowing Mozilla and the great successes that we've seen with Firefox and Thunderbird I've always been hoping that Sunbird would be the next calendaring project of the future. But for some or other odd reason it seems that there are not enough developers willing or able to spend time on this project. This was made clear by Simon Paquet on Wednesday, 18 February when he posted "Calendar Project at a critical juncture".

That announcement was kind of disappointing to me when having seen progress in the last number of years even if progress has been slow. But, thinking about it again, perhaps the decision was not so bad after all and I agree that perhaps the right decision has now been made. See also a follow up posting "More on the Sunbird/Lightning decision" on Thursday.

Thus, it is time that we focus all our energy on the Lightning project. Let's help Mozilla fulfill the mssion of the project.

I have now added, installed and tested the latest version of Lightning 0.9 to my version of Thunderbird on Kubuntu Hardy 8.04.2 as well as on Intrepid and can now for the first time interact smoothly with colleagues and friends who are still stuck in the MS Outlook world.

The Mozilla project is a global community of people who believe that openness, innovation, and opportunity are key to the continued health of the Internet.

The site with no purpose or goal?

As can be seen in the number of posts to this site it may very well be true that there is no purpose for it's very existence. Perhaps one day it will all change. Let's hope the day will come sooner rather than later.

In the mean time I've made some changes to the layout, my profile and have also included my twitter feeds in the sidebar.

Feedback is welcome in whatever shape, form or technology where you can find me.

Time to wake up again

Like so many others that have started their own blog spot on the web with great energy, I have slipped into a mode of not updating the spot on a regular basis.

Time to change all that.

Watch this space...

A lot has happened since my last post. Amongst others I now have a nice Nokia n95 8GB with which I can take photos and videos for sharing. Unfortunately time is still an issue.

My next mission will be to setup the phone so I can post photos online. But, it might not be tonight.

Banyan?

Derek Kite put some interesting points in his blog Freedom and Value. I was surprised to find a reference to Banyan in his post:

The high tech industry has not had any trouble generating source code and ideas. It has had trouble generating cash. Those who have been successful may think it is due to having hidden the code. If they were realistic, they would see that the critical elements have been everything else. All else being equal, Microsoft would still own the market even if their code was open from the beginning. Wordperfect would have disappeared when they couldn't move fast enough to develop a suite for Windows. Banyan would still have disappeared when tcpip made them unnecessary. etc etc. When your code becomes valueless, the fact that it is hidden adds nothing.

Are we talking about Banyan Vines from back then? Wow... that was one good network OS.

WAP or mobile enabled sites

According to Wikipedia:

Wireless Application Protocol or WAP was hyped at the time of its introduction, leading users to expect WAP to have the performance of the Web... In terms of speed, ease of use, appearance, and interoperability, the reality fell far short of expectations.

However, I believe that we still need to see a lot more sites that will include this medium of accessibility to information. Personally I would love to see more sites like the one that I was looking for yesterday, a site where you can do an on-line query to a dictionary or a translation service.

Blogging on blogger via Performancing and Firefox

Using Firefox and the performancing add-on (a full featured blog editor that sits right in your Firefox browser) it becomes real nice and easy to post to your blog without the need to jump through multiple hoops. Just write your blog entry even while offline, save it as a note, continue writing later and publish it as soon as you're done writing.

Now the only thing that would be nice is if we could have the spell check integration of Firefox 2.
